Chapter 13:The Truth
"...but there is medicine for the after effects-" he continued. Then Ikuto reached over his desk and grabbed his step-fathers throat.
"what medicine!? where do i get it!?" he yelled at him.
His step father wrenched Ikuto's hands from his neck and Ikuto stood straight again, his step-father hovered his hand over a red button at the side of his desk. "i can give you the medicine she needs, but in return...you work for me. Collecting X eggs and the usual search for the embryo." he explained, straightening his suit up.
Ikuto thought for a moment, he flashed back to a time where Amu talked to him about X eggs. Her words repeated in his mind, "no matter what reason you have, you can't do this to peoples hearts, your taking their thoughts and spirits from them. How can you honestly not feel guilty about what you've done? promise me, Ikuto that you wont continue this, or I wont ever forgive you, if you continue." Ikuto starred at the ground he tightened his fists, "if its for your sake, i have no choice." he thought to himself.
"fine. i'll work for you and you give me the medicine she needs. Any scams and you'll regret it" Ikuto hissed.
"Better start tonight, your girlfriend is probably getting weak." his step-father said, writing something down on a piece of paper in front of him.
Kukkai placed a cold cloth on Amu's forehead, her eyes were half open.
"Kukkai..." she whispered, looking at the ceiling. "Why is everything so wierd lately and why does everything seem so blurry?" she asked.
"I don't know" Kukkai muttered.
The next morning, Ikuto came back and went upstairs to Amu's room and dropped a brown paper bag on her desk. Amu looked at it, confused.
"What's that?" Kukkai asked, going to pick it up but then Ikuto walked out of the room so Kukkai followed him.
"it's her medicine" Ikuto said, leaning on a wall in the hallway.
"how do you know thats the medicine she needs? where'd you get it anyway?" Kukkai asked.
"I'm not stupid, i wouldnt give her some random medication i found. I got it from the same person who gave you the gadget that you used to make this hell of a mess." Ikuto replied.
"how do you know it's not poisoned or something if it came from him? whatever. Take over, i've gotta go." Kukkai said.
He walked in Amu's room, grabbed his stuff and said goodbye to Amu then left.
Ikuto walked in Amu's room and got out the medicine then gave it to her. Amu inspected it,
"This is different to those flu ones..." she said
"its a special kind, to make you better." Ikuto replied
Amu looked up at him, worried "Is it that serious? Ikuto, i'm getting the feeling that you and Kukkai know something I dont. Please tell me, I have the right to know" she said
"...when your feeling better, I might tell you" Ikuto said, thinking of how she might not be able to take in the fact of what Kukkai has done.
The next day, Kukkai was still with his family and Ikuto was still looking after Amu, but she had gotten better. Around lunchtime the two where out on the balcony, Amu leaned on the edge. After a moment she sighed and said, "something has been bothering me lately..."
"what is it?" Ikuto asked, looking at her.
"well..i've asked you a few times before but it's like you dodge the question. So i keep thinking to just leave it be, but i can't it's really frustrating and...also not knowing makes me a little worried." Amu paused then turned to Ikuto, with a serious look on her face, "Ikuto, I want you to tell me what happened before I got sick, why i have a pain in my neck and why don't I remember the last few days" She said firmly
Ikuto looked away from her.
"Ikuto" she said. Ikuto looked at her. "please."
"Well, then I guess I have to start from when Kukkai got kidnapped and move on from there"
Ikuto said. He then explained how his step father gave Kukkai the micro chip, what it could do and what Kukkai did and just as he was finishing telling her, Amu heard a noise behind her and didn't even need to take a glance to know who was behind her, instead she looked at the ground. Then after Ikuto finished explaining there was a silence.
"Amu-" Kukkai, behind her, began to say.
"Is it..." Amu interupted but trailed off. "is it true, Kukkai?" she asked, her back to him.
"well..." Kukkai muttered
"Is it true!?" Amu yelled, still looking at the ground.
"yeah" Kukkai said, guilty. There was another pause so he tryed to explain again, "but, Amu, I know it sounds bad but-" then he stopped when he saw Amu quickly turn around and she slapped him. Kukkai's eyes widened in shock. "how could you!? it sounds bad because it is!how can you take what you've done so lightly!? you took that device from that man and you used it as he wanted, you betrayed us! you betrayed me." Amu shouted at him. He looked at her, her firm yet upset eyes filled with tears that were looking up at him. She cried more, "you dont get it do you? you stole those thoughts from me. You took my own free will away from me. You blurred my memory and caused this pain that i've had to bear these last few days!? But above all that, you've taken the trust I had towards you, so i can't trust you, in fact, I dont even know who you are anymore, because the Kukkai I know would never, ever do something like that...I just..I dont want to be your friend and i dont want around you anymore..your definitely not the Kukkai I knew." She told Kukkai then looked at the ground again. Kukkai froze then went to put his hand on her shoulder but didn't.
"i understand" he muttered then walked away.
Amu turned in Ikuto's direction still looking at the ground, tears running down her cheaks. Ikuto came towards her, but she stepped back before he could comfort her,
"The medicine, that you gave me, you said it was special. That you didn't get it from a chemist...so where did you get it from?" Amu asked.
after a moment Ikuto replied, "from my stepfather"
Amu looked up at him, teary eyes wide with shock. "from him? but then..." Amu trailed off, thinking of how Ikuto's stepfather could have put poison or anything in the medicine, Amu froze, full of fear.
